Immune Booster Series: Vitamin D

Immune Booster Series: Vitamin D

Have you ever wondered why we need vitamin D and where we get it?

If yes, you are in the right place.

Vitamin D is VITAL for IMMUNE HEALTH. It’s known to have important roles with immune cells, and deficiency has been associated with increased autoimmunity and increased susceptibility to infection.

In fact…

Studies have shown that vitamin D can strengthen the ability to control infection. Many studies have also shown that individuals with lower vitamin D levels are more likely to experience upper respiratory tract infections than those with sufficient vitamin D levels.

So where then do we get vitamin D from?

Unfortunately, there aren’t many great natural sources of vitamin D through food. The majority of food-based sources have been fortified - in other words, the nutrients have been added to them.

But, no need to worry because the BEST SOURCE of vitamin D comes from the sun, where having just thirty minutes of full-body exposure can produce 10,000 IU of vitamin D3!

So all we need to do to most effectively reach our Vitamin D requirement is just go outside, sit back, and relax in the sunshine.

Well, if you’re like us living in the Midwest, our exposure to vitamin D is reduced significantly in the winter time. Unfortunately, this can set us up for inadequate serum levels of vitamin D3. It is hypothesized that this is why many more people get sick during the winter months than summer months.

In fact, The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey identified that approximately 42% of the population is deemed to have insufficient levels of vitamin D, with African Americans and women having the highest prevalence of deficiency.

We can turn to a vitamin D supplement as the solution!

But NOT just ANY vitamin D supplement. When finding a supplement, ensure that it is vitamin D3 and not D2! Why?

Vitamin D3 increases serum vitamin D levels the best!

With supplementation, make sure to take it with a meal to enhance absorption. Vitamin D is known as a fat-soluble vitamin meaning that in order for it to actually get absorbed into the body it needs healthy fats - consider an avocado or a handful of nuts!

If you too are living in a place where the seasons affect your ability to get outside, research a healthy vitamin D3 supplement to make sure you are getting enough vitamin D in your body!

Hello! I am a current student studying chiropractic care at National University of Health Sciences. I graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor’s in Nutrition and Dietetics. I had the privilege to swim for the university, which further inspired me to continue my education toward manual therapy. The majority of my education has been focused on how to treat chronic disease or chronic problems. I started to get frustrated with the fact that so many people struggle with chronic back problems and chronic health problems. This inspired me to further my education with acupuncture and a functional medicine program, which I am currently enrolled in. The health world can be hard to navigate with many opinions or biased research on the Internet. My goal is to empower individuals with evidence-based research so that we all can start preventing and healing disease and chronic pain.
